Chinese billionaire’s averse to philanthropy and decide to skip Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s luxury dinner party

You won’t take your worldly wealth when you leave for your heavenly abode, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it while you’re alive and spent half your life to earn it? Maybe that’s why the Chinese are tying o steer clear of philanthropists Bill Gates and Warren Buffett as they hosted a billionaire's banquet in China. That doesn’t mean the Chinese lack philanthropists; Chinese entrepreneur Chen Guangbiao has joined the elite group. While Gates and Buffett have lived a full life are have now grown tired of their rich, so much so to give it away without battering an eyelid, I guess Chinese entrepreneurs have a long wish list to reach that place yet. As a result only a handful of the 50 millionaires invited to a dinner party at a luxury hotel in north-west Beijing decide to show up. Being a communist country, Chinese billionaires have a lot to think about like exposing complete worth of their wealth, tax investigations and forced donation by westerners. A local newspaper equaled the event to the "Hongmen Banquet; an underhanded banquet staged by a general of the Qin Dynasty which was aimed at entrapping and eventually killing his detractors

UK joins space tourism as the first seats sell for £250,000 per head

If you though the US and the Russians are the only two nations promoting space tourism, then its time to add UK to your list. A team of British racketeers are all set to be the first ever private firm to that can get tourists to the space and back. And before the Starchaser sends people on an out of the world experience in 2015, Steve Bennett and astronaut Matt Shewbridge are busy getting their trail runs right. To flag off, November will see the testing of their 20ft Launch Escape System (LES), which will work as a rescue pod separating the rocket in the event that the spacecraft fails.
This will be followed by a manned launch test on the 70ft 'Starchaser 4 off Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, to be followed by the biggest rocket launched in Britain ever. A successful in-flight test will ensure tests with at least three-to-five passengers on board. While the plans seem in place, Bennett is still short by £20,000 to launch the 20ft LES rocket test flight, but he plans to raise another £200,000 by next year. Two secret tourists have already booked their seats by paying £250,000 per head for the first seats. The other seat can be procured by paying £98,000 and taxes. In the last eight years Steve and his boys have managed to raise a staggering £4million for their dream runs.

Bell & Ross Watches Now Available For Purchase Online In America

Front-runner in e-commerce innovation for the luxury watch industry, Bell & Ross has opened its e-Boutique doors to US customers. Almost a year ago Bell & Ross opened up their e-commerce platform to European customers looking to buy the high-end watch brand's timepiece online. Now, as of late September 2010, customers in the US receive the ability to buy Bell & Ross watches and accessories online - direct from Bell & Ross.

At this time, most luxury watch brands do not allow online sales. Bell & Ross' approach to this was to sell online themselves, and use their retailer network for order fulfillment purposes. A few years ago it would have been heresy to suggest to major European brands to sell watches online. Now you can enjoy e-commerce solutions for brand such as Cartier, Longines, Bell & Ross, and more. Payment options at this time are only credit card (so you better be able to put $5,000 or more on your card in a single day). According to Bell & Ross, the US e-commerce model is the same that is being used in Europe - so it goes to show that the model Bell & Ross was experimenting with in Europe worked out well.

Levi's Opens Review of $100 Million Global Media Business

Levi's spent more than $60 million on measured media in the U.S. last year, according to Kantar Media, but the global account is estimated to be worth $100 million, with nearly 70% of that being spent in the U.S.
According to people familiar with the situation, the review is an effort by the marketer to consolidate the nearly 20 media agencies it works with around the world to one or two agencies. Executives said the marketer will be inviting less than a handful of those incumbent shops to pitch, although it's still unclear which agencies it will ask to take part.
Omnicom Group's OMD won media planning and buying duties for the Levi's and Dockers brands in North America back in October 2008. The agency went on to produce award-winning work for the clothing manufacturer, including the Dockers shakeable iPhone app. In an interview with Ad Age earlier this year, Karen Riley-Grant, director of global consumer marketing at Levi's Strauss, credited the app with a 300% increase in chatter, an unprecedented number for the brand, she said at the time. In May Dockers held a pitch for its digital creative account but decided not to award any of the contending agencies. Instead, it consolidated all of its digital media business with OMD.
Jones Lundin Beals is running the review. The search consultant referred all calls to the client.
Separately, Levi's is evaluating its chief marketing officer role. Jaime Cohen Szulc, the company's first global CMO, left the company last month. He is now president-Latin America at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. In the interim, Larry Ruff, chief strategy officer, has assumed responsibility for the brand's global marketing strategies and initiatives, a spokesman said. Earlier this month, a spokesman said a search for a replacement had not begun and today a spokeswoman said there "was nothing more to share at this time on a CMO."
Late in 2008, Levi's tapped Wieden & Kennedy to handle its creative account in the Americas. The spokeswoman said no changes were under way on the creative side of the business. Wieden was responsible for the global "Go Forth" campaign, launched last summer.
"Nothing has changed on the creative side," the spokeswoman said. "W&K is the agency of record for Levi's Americas and we continue to evaluate the most strategic global solutions for our marketing and advertising campaigns around the world."

Pfizer Launches Review of $700 Million Media Business

Carat, which won the Red Bull U.S. media account last week, could not be reached for comment, and Pfizer did not return calls before press time.
New York-based Joanne Davis Consulting will be handling the review. People familiar with the situation said the portion of the business currently run by independent shop TargetCast, which includes media planning for Pfizer's consumer health-care brands, will not be part of the review.
Pfizer ranks No. 5 on Ad Age's 100 Leading National Advertisers report, with more than $2.1 billion in U.S. ad spending.
The Aegis-owned shop was Pfizer's media-planning and -buying agency of record prior to the $68 billion Wyeth merger last year, and the consolidation of media duties makes Pfizer one of Carat's biggest chunks of business -- all told, probably more than $1 billion in billings.
This is the second massive media review in the pharma sector in as many weeks. Last week Ad Age reported that drug giant GlaxoSmithKline is prepping a review of U.S. media duties on its massive $1.4 billion account.
Pfizer last week shifted creative duties for its Advil brand's $80 million advertising accountto Dentsu-owned McGarryBowen.
Pfizer has made several changes on the agency front in the past year. Last October, it moved creative duties on its $120 million Viagra account to McGarryBowen from longtime agency partner Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann Erickson. That was the second large piece of business it took from the McCann family of companies and moved to McGarryBowen in a matter of months. Earlier in 2009 Pfizer also awarded McGarryBowen creative duties for its Chantix smoking-cessation drug, which had previously been at McCann HumanCare. And Omnicom Group's Tribal DDB was named digital agency for Advil in March. Pfizer also tapped Omnicom's Rapp in October 2009 for Viagra's digital and CRM duties, which total nearly $20 million.

Allow Booze Ads in Campus Papers

The court should "step in to stop the growing trend of government regulators to censor more and more speech directed to adults because those at the threshold of adulthood might see it," Dan Jaffe, exec VP for government relations for the Association of National Advertisers, said in a statement.
The association is joining the 4A's and American Advertising Federation in asking the court to overturn a recent appeals court ruling that upheld the long-standing regulation. The ad groups argue that the ruling runs counter to the Supreme Court's trend of "increasing protection for commercial speech," according to a brief filed with the Supreme Court, which also points out that many students are of legal drinking age.
Virginia prohibits student-run campus publications from running alcohol ads unless they are "in reference to a dining establishment." The exempted ads cannot refer to a particular brand or price and instead must use generic phrases such as "beer," "wine" or "cocktails."
The Cavalier Daily, at the University of Virginia, and the The Collegiate Times, at Virginia Tech, each blame the law for $30,000 in lost advertising revenue annually.
The newspapers say the regulation violates their First Amendment rights and they won an initial case before a district court. But the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond overturned the ruling, finding the government has a "substantial interest" in keeping the ban in place.
The appeals court sided with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which asserts that "history, consensus and common sense support the link between advertising bans in college newspapers and a decrease in demand for alcohol among college students," according to court filings.
The college newspapers countered that the ban on alcohol advertising is ineffective because students will still see ads for alcohol in other non-student-run publications.

Best Places to Work in Marketing & Media 2010

The recession of the past few years has forced great challenges upon the employed and unemployed alike in the media, marketing and advertising industry, as the jobless hunt relentlessly for new opportunities and many of the employed, fearing pink slips, find themselves locked into jobs that offer little or no career growth, flexibility or psychic income.
GO PLAY: A work-hard, play-hard environment at Go Daddy makes whitewater rafting trips a priority.
GO PLAY: A work-hard, play-hard environment at Go Daddy makes whitewater rafting trips a priority.
But despite or even in light of economic challenges, there are companies that are thriving in their commitments to their employees and to their work. They are workplaces that cultivate camaraderie, reward creativity and spur innovation. They're winning accounts, customers and talent eager to contribute to organizations they believe in.
And those are the Best Places to Work in Marketing & Media. This list, Advertising Age's first, is a celebration of the 30 employers in the marketing, media and advertising industry that have created environments in which people love to work and contribute their best ideas. Identifying and recognizing these employers is a joint effort of Advertising Age and Best Companies Group, a firm that conducts "best places to work" programs across the country.
The Best Places to Work in Marketing & Media program was open to all publicly or privately held advertising agencies, media organizations and companies with marketing operations of more than 25 employees. Each applicant must have had at least 25 employees working in the United States to be eligible.
BCG managed the registration process, conducted a two-part survey process, evaluated data and ultimately chose the companies that were good enough to make the list. The deadline to sign up for the program was April 30.
Part one of the assessment (three-quarters of each company's score) involved a confidential 76-question survey that was used to evaluate the employees' workplace experience and company culture. Part two of the assessment (one-quarter of each company's score) consisted of a questionnaire used to collect information about each company's benefits, policies, practices and other general information. The combined sets of data enabled BCG reviewers to conduct an in-depth analysis of each company's strengths and offerings.
Program participation was free; each organization had the opportunity to purchase a report summarizing the employee data collected through the employee survey process. In addition to the employee-opinion data, the report also included transcribed employee-written comments, as well as the marketing and media industry benchmarking data from the participating and winning companies.
The 30 companies presented here, listed alphabetically are indeed innovators, arguably benchmarks against which other employers can measure themselves. These companies simultaneously nurture employees, clients and their communities with things like diversity programs, family-friendly benefits, education reimbursement and workspaces designed to stimulate creativity. There will be names in this list that you are familiar with, and names you've never heard of. They're based in New York, San Francisco and everywhere in between. Some are large, with multiple locations, and others are small, single-office shops. But they all have one thing in common: They're committed to being the top employers in this industry. Thank you, participants, and congratulations to our 30 best places to work.

GM Taps Spike DDB for Chevy

Spike DDB is the joint partnership between film director Spike Lee and DDB Worldwide focusing on integrated communications and niche marketing to African-Americans, trendsetters and transcultural consumers. It is based in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Mr. Lee also maintains his film-production company, 40 Acres and a Mule.
According to a GM spokeswoman, Chevrolet hasn't had an African-American agency of record in years. Sanders/Wingo, El Paso, Texas, most recently had the account. Publicis Groupe's Vigilante, among other African-American agencies, had done some assignments for the brand as well.
"We've seen outstanding work from Spike DDB for their current clients and the creative approach they offer Chevrolet will be a great fit for the brand," said Chris Perry, U.S. VP of Chevrolet marketing. "Along with the recent announcement of LatinWorks, we are expanding our multicultural agency representation and emphasizing the importance of multicultural consumers to Chevrolet."
Spike DDB joins Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and LatinWorks as part of Chevrolet's agency roster. Goodby, San Francisco, is the brand's general-market agency of record; LatinWorks, Austin, Texas, is the Hispanic agency of record. Both were selected, without review, by GM's new VP-U.S. Marketing Joel Ewanick. Unlike the scattershot of African-American work, Mr. Ewanick's choice of LatinWorks replaced 13-year Hispanic marketing incumbent Accentmarketing, Miami. LatinWorks was Advertising Age's 2009 Multicultural Agency of the Year.
"We believe we've sought out and found the right agency partners for Chevrolet," Mr. Ewanick said. "Chevrolet has always been an inclusive brand and we want all our agencies to help us get that message to consumers."
It is not known if Spike DDB will have a presence in Detroit.
The appointment of an Asian-American agency is still to be determined.

The French Laundry: Consistently Ranked Among the World's Best

Few fine restaurants boast a past as sordid as The French Laundry. Even so, the Yountville, Calif. eatery is consistently rated among the world's best, and makes for an easy choice as a Luxist nominee in the best fine domestic dining category.

In the late 1880s, the building that currently contains the three Michelin star French Laundry was a humble saloon. When a town ordinance mandated that no alcohol be served within two miles of Yountville, the building was converted first into a brothel, then to a French steam laundry by the 1920s. In 1974, the town's mayor bought the laundry and converted it into a restaurant; twenty years later it was purchased by current owner and chef Thomas Keller.
Keller had spent much of the prior decade working at some of the finest restaurants in the world, including Guy Savoy and Taillevent in Paris, both Luxist Awards' fine dining nominees in the international category . He used his experience abroad to create the French-influenced American cuisine that currently populates The French Laundry's menu-like a foie gras dish decked with a Riesling glaze, Silverado Trail strawberries, Piedmont hazelnut streusel, radish, watercress and black truffle.

The French Laundry's prix fixe dinner menu costs $250, service included; drinks can run the tab much higher. Throughout the nine-course tasting menu, though, no single ingredient is ever repeated, leaving the palate surprised and delighted at every turn.

Emeril opened Delmonico in 1998, choosing New Orleans' historic garden district for his restaurant. The restaurant quickly gained fame for its delicious offerings, most notably the crispy pork cheek. Over the past summer, chef Spencer Minch---who holds down the fort when Emeril isn't around-cooked up a different menu focusing on a different country's cuisine every month.

This September, the nation of choice is Germany. Dishes on the three-course, $45 menu include beer braised bratwurst with house-made sauerkraut, mustard and a soft pretzel; white wine poached trout with brown butter potatoes, asparagus and German green sauce; and roast duck breast with apple braised cabbage, celery root, and juniper glaze.

Joe's Stone Crab: Serving Stone Crabs for Nearly a Century

In 1913, Hungarian-born waiter Joe Weiss left New York for Miami Beach after his doctors suggested the climate would be better for his asthma. He and his wife, Jennie, opened a small lunch counter at a local bathing casino when Miami Beach was a sleepy backwater town. During its earliest years, people were not yet eating stone crabs--the local crustacean wasn't yet considered edible. Joe's Stone Crab changed that.

Anyone who's anyone visiting Miami Beach eats at Joe's Stone Crab. Indeed, the restaurant's clientelle includes some of the most famous names in America throughout the 20th century, from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Al Capone, Gloria Swanson, J. Edgar Hoover, and Amelia Earhart. The restaurant is now run by the third and fourth generations of the Weiss family.
Some of the restaurant's signature dishes include its stone crabs served with its famous mustard sauce, creamed spinach, hash brown potatoes and cole slaw. Be sure to order Joe's famous Key lime pie and its delicious bread pudding. Fortunately, the restaurant has a website that enables its many fans to order its offerings. Joe's stone crab claws and other goodies can be ordered and shipped overnight throughout the continental United States, ice cold and ready for cracking. Complete package meals include a mallet, a cracking board, cocktail forks, bibs and instructions. Orders can be placedonline or by calling Joe's toll-free number at (800) 780-CRAB (2722).

The restaurant is located at 11 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach. Joe's does not accept reservations; customers are served on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call the restaurant at (305) 673-0365. Hours of operation depends on the season. The regular season begins on Thursday, October 15, 2010.

Emeril's Delmonico: Classic Creole in New Orleans

Emeril Lagasse may be known more for his television appearances than for his actual cooking these days, but his Delmonico restaurant in New Orleans remains a bastion of fine cuisine-and it's a Luxist nominee in the most romantic restaurant category.

Growing up in Fall River, Mass., Emeril learned the cooking trade as a youngster, working in a Portuguese bakery as a teenager. He continued on to culinary school at Johnson and Wales University, traveling next to France to hone his skills. After his European stint, Emeril returned to the United States to work in restaurants across the Northeast.
